Doctor of Philosophy Essay Example for Free
Doctor of Philosophy Essay Rich are not relevant to a general audience: ââ¬Å"From the time I was small, I have been very active in defending our environment,â⬠ââ¬Å"From the first time I saw environmental protestors, I realized that they were all crazy. â⬠Note that some of these topics could be converted into theses that would be arguable to a general audience if they were de-personalized and established as arguable issues. Also keep in mind that personal examples may play a significant supporting role in your essayââ¬âbut not in the thesis or topic sentences. â⬠¢ A thesis should be very clearly written in precise, familiar terms, avoiding language that is overly vague, broad, specialized, or technical. You can assume that your general audience consists of well-informed, intelligent adults with good, general vocabularies, but you cannot assume they are specialists in a particular subjectââ¬âat least not in English 1A. Example of a vague and overly broad thesis: ââ¬Å"In some cultures, aspects of the environment may play a role in lifeââ¬â¢s spiritual and metaphysical dimension. â⬠Example of a thesis that is too specialized for a general reader: ââ¬Å"The image of the child in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century scientific, historical, and literary narratives is often representing or figuring interiority, growth, historicity, and development. â⬠(This thesis may be quite clear to advanced scholars of literature or history, but a general audience would probably find it too obscure. ) â⬠¢ A thesis may reliably forecast the organization of the essay, letting the reader know what main supporting points will be covered and in what order. This forecast is sometimes called a plan of development (POD) or a blueprint. A POD is often a good idea, but it is not an obligatory part of the thesis in English 1A; you may present it in the sentence following the thesis, or you may skip it altogether Example of POD in thesis: Skateboarding should be limited to special parks because it poses a nuisance to pedestrians, leads to serious injuries, and causes thousands of dollarsââ¬â¢ worth of damage to public and private property. Example of POD following thesis: Skateboarding is not just a harmless recreation and should, in fact, be limited to special parks. As it now stands, the sport poses a nuisance to pedestrians, leads to serious injuries, and causes thousands of dollarsââ¬â¢ worth of damage to public and private property. The following thesis rules also apply to your essays in English 1A, but keep in mind that as your academic writing becomes increasingly skilled and sophisticated, you may outgrow these restrictions. And they may not apply to the essays you write in other courses (check with your instructors). â⬠¢ Limit your thesis statement to one sentence. â⬠¢ Do NOT frame your thesis as a questionââ¬âit should be a declarative statement. â⬠¢ Do NOT rely on an implied thesis. We will encounter some implied theses in our readings, but your essays must have an explicit thesis statement. â⬠¢ The thesis must appear in the essayââ¬â¢s first paragraph (the introduction) at the end of the paragraph. â⬠¢ Underline your thesis in English 1A to make it easier for me (and for you! ) to identify it.

Genetically Engineered Organisms Essay -- seeds, monsanto, food
Genetically Engineered Organisms Without vigorous experimentation or public consent genetically modified foods have been introduced into our daily kitchens without much notice from the general public. Widespread use of genetically modified (GM) seeds began in 1996 and since then has spread to cover 167 million acres around the world; two-thirds of that quantity being in America (Figure 1). Figure 1 Monsanto is the main developer of these seeds and controls over 90% of the American market, alerting a possible crisis in the democratic system. (Cummins and lilliston, 2004). Alarmingly, some of the largest biotechnological companies have also introduced toxic pesticides into our environments, including but not limiting to: Agent Orange, DDT, and PCBââ¬â¢s, causing much worry worldwide. This report will cover the basics of genetic engineering, genetically engineered seeds, possible effects on human health and affects on the environment. The four most common genetically engineered (GE) crops grown on a commercial scale are soybeans, corn, cotton and canola. Among these, two main traits have been added: herbicide resistance (75 percent of all GE crops), pesticide resistance (17 percent) or both (8 percent), (Genetically Engineered Food, Page xiv). The first steps in genetically modifying organisms is identifying the trait you want the plant to have, and finding another organism that has it. Then, the gene can be inserted into the plant using a 22-caliber charge that fires a metal particle coated with DNA, called a ââ¬Å"gene gunâ⬠. Another method of inserting the desired gene includes heating the seed and placing it under stress causing it to be susceptible to a bug called Agrobacterium tumefaciens. This bacterium tricks the organism into b... ...wever possibly inaccurate, allow us to speculate on new technologies which could help feed the growing population of humans on earth. Essay - 1049 Words
My team in Gaza were especially fond of one brand of Israeli honey cookies. We gorged whenever we spotted them, a Hebrew label among the Arabic. I dawdled over that label one morning, imagining Hebron settlers sipping coffee with Gaza strawberries. My colleague misunderstood my reverie, and helpfully reminded me, Itââ¬â¢s just a cookie. Itââ¬â¢s not politics. The settlers with the red-stained fingers vanished. Living in Gaza, the rest of the world could look absurd. Newt Gingrich, an American politician, disparaged Palestinians as an invented people. A Gazan colleague flounced into my office. Hands on hips, she demanded, Isnââ¬â¢t everybody invented? Israelis and Gazans had such basic, human things in common. At funeral after funeral, theyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦An IDF poster from the 2014 war made it simple: Israel uses weapons to protect civilians, while Hamas uses civilians to protect its weapons. Thereââ¬â¢s no living with people like that. These are not the first belligerents to lie, or to wilfully refuse to see the humanity of the other side. As a witness in Gaza from 2011 to 2015, I was outraged by the asymmetry and the tactics of this conflict, and the failure of imagination ââ¬â but Iââ¬â¢m not Israeli. And Iââ¬â¢m hardly the first Jew who has waded through the fission-fusion-fission reaction of recognizing Israel as a state rather than as a religion. I was left with the dismay I might feel if my sister erupted in repeated, violent road rage. I didnââ¬â¢t do it. However, she is a part of me. The name on the warrant is also mine. So it is, when Israelââ¬â¢s elected government attaches Judaism to its apparently inalienable right to dominate. In the name of religion, they withhold from others precisely the human rights that we Jews claim for ourselves. Their religious appropriation makes us more than witnesses. Ultra-Orthodox Jewish children play between Sukkahs, temporary structures built for the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, in Jerusalem. How flagrant, to confine millions of people in the name of a holiday that celebrates the flimsy, temporary nature of our walls.
