The Civil War Was A Very Difficult Time For The United States
The Civil War was a very difficult time for the United States. During this time, there were political battles and the country was divided primarily into two sides. The two sides were the Union and the Confederate States of America. The Confederate States of America, also known as the Confederacy, was a group of states in the southern section of the United States that desired to succeed from the Union. George Caleb Bingham, the artist of the painting Order No. 11, was a resident of Missouri during this time. Bingham is able to allow us, the viewer, a glimpse into this moment of history and actually experience the emotions that were felt by the people in Missouri at the time of Ewingââ¬â¢s Order No. 11. A new style of fighting ignited whenâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The artist is showing the audience that there were many people displaced as we look on to this scene. The persons depicted are a part of the background with little emotion that it almost makes the viewer to wonder if they were a little numb to such a familiar scene that was taking place to the left as they exit the scene. There is one woman that appears to be actively not looking towards the scene taking place which lend that maybe she did not even want to be noticed by the Union soldiers. There were others that seemed as if this scene had just occurred and they were in the process of turning their heads to see what was happening. Bingham used dark and light in order to allow the viewer to see the purpose and the focal point of the portrait that will really communicate his main purpose for the portrait. In the lighted area, one soldier has his weapon out and the other soldier seems to be reaching to pull his weapon out as two people are lying dead in the street. One of the people that have been shot is a woman with perhaps either a slave or freed slave holding her and her expression exudes fear. As she holds the woman, she is staring up at the older man as if watching him react to what has happened. The older man, seemingly the husband, is standing with his arm held out with a woman grabbing on to him. The woman clinging to him is younger, as if maybe a daughter.
